What topic can have such a meaningful and profound impact on our lives than knowing God? We all possess the God-shaped hole in our beings, which is a testimony to the Lord’s desire to commune with us by giving us a natural desire to seek his presence. Our relationship with Jesus begins the moment we trust in him for salvation (Acts 16:31). If you have accepted Jesus as your savior, you know that while it is life-changing, it’s like falling in love (literally). The nature of your feelings will change. No single encounter or spiritual epiphany can provide the complete knowledge of communing with God.
Commit to the Relationship
Knowing God intimately requires a commitment to developing relationships, and the only way to increase our relationship with God is to spend time in his presence. We learn that our sinful life is displeasing (Acts 17:30; 2 Corinthians 7:10; 2 Peter 3:9) to him, but to repent, literally turning around and facing God in righteousness dramatically pleases the Lord (Psalm 34:15; 1 Peter 3:12-18). We must also add communication to our study of scripture, as all intimate relationships require communication. Our contact with our spouse and family makes conflict less severe and increases mutual understanding. We can be confident that God knows us; therefore, we are always playing catch-up to grow spiritually.
Always Communicate!
We know God intimately by communicating in prayer ( 2 Chronicles 7:14; Psalm 145:18; Matthew 7:7-8; John 14:13-14; 1 Timothy 2:8; James 5:17-18). Through prayer, we lay our cares and our souls before God to both hear and answer. We must also keep in mind that God is not a holy concierge. Wishing for material things and circumstances to go our way will leave us wanting. God knows what we need to live and generously provide. Prayers on behalf of others, prayers that bring glory to God, and prayers of gratitude can be effective since they will closely align with God’s instructions on how we relate to each other and him. This is not to minimize the need to verbalize our pain. We can always ask for his help (Philippians 4:6). The Lord hears our prayers. Pray today, tonight, and never cease!
